What is FIRST LEGO League?
First LEGO League is for grades 4th through 8th.
Each year FIRST releases a new challenge that is based on a universal topic From these topics FLL is broken down into three different components that teams will compete in:
This is where the teams figure out an innovative solution to the challenge given. After that the kids research the problem and solution, create a presentation, design a power point or use some other method to demonstrate the solution to others.
These are the foundation of the FIRST program. Some examples of Core Values are:
•We are a team.
•We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.
•We know our coaches and mentors don’t have all the answers; we learn together.
•We honor the spirit of friendly competition.
•What we discover is more important than what we win.
•We share our experiences with others.
•We display Gracious Professionalism® and Coopertition® in everything we do.
•We have FUN!
Core Values distinguishes FIRST from other competitions by promoting teamwork and cooperation.
This is where the teams come together to build a unique robot to complete the given tasks. Robots are built and programmed using the LEGO MINDSTORM components. Teams compete head to head at competitions to maximize their points from the list of tasks.
FIRST LEGO League is the second part of our three stage program. It promotes individuality while working as a team, creative and logical thinking, and most importantly having fun. It is a great place to jump into the FIRST program.
What We Do
For the 2016 season we had three Girl Scout FIRST LEGO League teams and 4 4-H FIRST LEGO League teams. Both teams meet year round. They work on not only the competition aspect of the FIRST LEGO League program but also explore other areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
But most of all, these teams have fun!
For the 2016 season, two of our teams progressed to the University of Pennsylvania Regional Championships. Each team competed well and had a good time doing so.
